Set a nonstick skillet or grill pan over medium heat and allow it to come to temperature.

Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter over one side of each bread slice.

Place two slices of bread, butter-side down, onto the preheated skillet.

Arrange half of the mozzarella evenly on each bread slice in the skillet.

Place one warmed breaded chicken cutlet on top of the cheese for each sandwich.

Spoon marinara sauce evenly over the chicken cutlets.

Layer remaining mozzarella slices over the marinara.

Close each sandwich with a remaining bread slice, buttered side facing up.

Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until bread is golden brown, cheese is melted, and the exterior is crisp.

Remove sandwiches from skillet, let rest for 1 minute. Cut in half and serve hot.
