Melt unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Arrange five individual mounds of thinly sliced onions in the skillet.

Divide the seasoned beef into five balls and place one beef ball onto each onion pile.

Using a sturdy spatula, firmly press each beef ball flat onto the onions to form thin patties.

Cook patties onion-side down until onions are browned and beginning to crisp, about 6 minutes. Flip each patty and cook to desired doneness.

Place a slice of cheddar cheese on the bottom half of each bun. Set the hot burger patties with fried onions over the cheese.
