Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers (Printer-Friendly)

Crisp onions, seasoned beef, and melted cheese come together in this iconic Oklahoma-style burger.

# What You’ll Need:

→ Beef Patty

01 - 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20 preferred)
02 - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
03 - Salt, to taste
04 - Black pepper, to taste

→ Fried Onions

05 - 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
06 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

→ Assembly

07 - 5 hamburger buns
08 - 5 slices cheddar cheese
09 - Pickles, for serving (optional)
10 - Additional toppings of choice such as lettuce, tomato, or mustard (optional)

# Steps to Make This:

01 - In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly by hand until evenly incorporated.
02 - Melt unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Arrange five individual mounds of thinly sliced onions in the skillet.
03 - Divide the seasoned beef into five balls and place one beef ball onto each onion pile.
04 - Using a sturdy spatula, firmly press each beef ball flat onto the onions to form thin patties.
05 - Cook patties onion-side down until onions are browned and beginning to crisp, about 6 minutes. Flip each patty and cook to desired doneness.
06 - Place a slice of cheddar cheese on the bottom half of each bun. Set the hot burger patties with fried onions over the cheese.
07 - Add pickles and any additional desired toppings. Cap with the top buns and serve hot.

# Additional Notes:

01 - For enhanced flavor and a crispier crust, avoid overmixing the ground beef. Use a mandoline or sharp knife to achieve uniformly thin onion slices.
